In 2020, thousands of employees were let go from companies all around the globe. A year or so later, these same companies overhired, bringing people back with an air optimism.
Now, seeking an appropriate balance, employers are engaged in the same practice of layoffs, but using a new term, ‘rightsizing’.
While it may sound a bit more practical or logical, ‘rightsizing’ defines what’s happening to the organization, but not what’s happening to the people.
How can we make tough business decisions AND re-humanize the process?
💼 Communication- explain the rationale for layoffs. Announce layoffs in person, not over email, text, or slack.
💼 Provide outplacement career transition support for laid off, ‘rightsized’ workers. (Outplacement is career coaching that could be as simple as a new resume or much more comprehensive, including job search strategy, LinkedIn branding, etc.) This kind of service, as part of a severance package, mitigates risk to the employer, eases fears for the remaining team members, and helps out going employees land on their feet faster.
💼 No longer an execs only perk, outplacement services leverage both technology and personal coaching and are scaled to be affordable for ALL level of employees.
