Everybody feels stuck at some point in life (usually more than once!)
For me, I knew something needed to change when I was working in educational technology and was not getting to spend enough time interacting with and helping individuals with career planning. I always imagined the technology would connect students to the world beyond schools and help them explore possibilities, but that’s not what I saw happening. I realized I could be much more effective in a different environment.
As Adam Alter, a psychology professor at NYU, shared in a recent The New York Times article, even high achievers face moments of stagnation. Dr. Alter has dedicated much of his research to understanding why we get stuck and how to move forward. Here are a few strategies he suggests:
☝️ Do a ‘friction audit’ – Identify and remove small stressors that hold you back.
Reframe negative thoughts – Challenge self-critical or catastrophic thinking.
☝️ Try futurecasting – Envision the life you want and create actionable steps to get there.
☝️ Share your goals – Telling others can help create accountability and opportunities.
☝️Do something meaningful – Align your actions with your values to regain momentum.
